Getting Married

Please contact the Parish Office for further information about Weddings at St Peter's.

If you are interested in being married at St Peter's, you may find the following frequently asked questions helpful.

There is also some useful information on https://www.churchofengland.org/life-events/weddings and http://www.yourchurchwedding.org/.

Who can be married at St Peter's?

Anyone who lives in the Parish of Hersham or whose parents live here is generally entitled to be married at St Peter's, irrespective of whether they attend church regularly. Under the Church of England Marriage Measure 2008, it is also possible for couples who live outside the parish to get married at St. Peter's, provided one or other of them has a "qualifying connection" with the parish. Please contact the Parish Office who will be happy to explore with you whether or not you have such a connection.

How can I find out whether I live in the parish?

Try looking at the parish map. If you are still not sure, the Parish Office will be pleased to help.

Are there any other restrictions?

Special regulations apply if you are not British Nationals and have not resided in the UK for 6 months. We will help you with these when you contact us.

Does it matter if one of us has been divorced?

Divorce is not always a barrier to remarriage in church, but if either of you has been divorced, please ask the Parish Office to arrange for you to meet one of our clergy to discuss your particular circumstances.

How do I book a wedding at St Peter's?

Contact the Parish Office. Our parish secretary will help you work out if you have a qualifying connection (see above). If you do, we will send you a Wedding Application Form to complete and return with any necessary supporting documentation. After this we will be able to confirm the date and time of your wedding.

What happens after that?

We aim to work very closely with you as you prepare for your wedding. Therefore, as soon as your wedding is booked, one of our clergy will be in touch so that we can begin to get to know one another and start to plan your big day.

At the beginning of each year, we hold a meeting in church for all the coming year's wedding couples. This is an opportunity for you to meet the minister who will officiate at your wedding, the organist and the parish secretary, and to begin the detailed process of arranging your wedding service. You will also have the opportunity to get to know some of the other couples and to talk about what it means to embark on Christian marriage.

A second meeting, with the minister taking your service, will be arranged for about 6 weeks prior to the service. This gives you a further opportunity to discuss arrangements, to meet the minister privately, and to talk more personally about marriage. Finally, we will organise a rehearsal for a few days before the wedding so that all the key people know what will happen and their part in the ceremony.
